Ryan Reynolds, Kenan Thompson Make a Lady GaGa Sighting (SNL Promo)

The Baltimore Sun's GaGa Concert Review

John-John Williams IV (of the Baltimore Sun) was at last night's Lady Gaga show at DAR Constitution Hall. Here are his thoughts:

Lady Gaga knows how to put on a show -- when she's on stage. Too bad she makes her fans wait an hour and a half for an hour performance with no encore.

That's right: At her DAR Constitution Hall show last night, there was no opening act, an hour-long performance by Lady Gaga and no encore. But like I said, when she's on stage, she's one heck of a performer.

The minute the curtain dropped, revealing Lady Gaga dressed in a geometric, glittery metallic dress with an Anna Wintour blonde and pink bob, she had the crowd's attention.

Gaga launched into her hit single "Paparazzi," working the screaming fans by screaming "D.C." and flashing the middle finger at the end of the song.

It quickly became apparent that Lady Gaga is more than just a shiny pop package. She’s a phenomenal performer with a myriad of tricks up her haute coutured sleeves. She's a great singer, pianist, and showman too: She was tickling the ivories while squatting on the piano bench in heels ...

A little later, Gaga bounced up on top of the bench and bent down to plink a couple notes. She also threw her foot up onto the keys at one point and played some more.

You know Lady Gaga's over-the-top persona has been carefully calculated. And you know she's a bit of a thrill-seeking attention whore. But all that doesn't matter. The girl can flat out sing. She's got raw singing power a la Kelly Clarkson and swagger like Pink.

It's hard to think of a recent dance music artist who has been more successful. And other than Gwen Stefani and Fergie, I can't think of another white songstress who is able to make such a seamless cross-over into hip-hop. (Just ask Kanye West, who she will be touring with this fall.)

Last night, Lady Gaga told the crowd that she was a problem child who has grown into a woman who only wants to make her father proud. She also told the crowd that her father was scheduled to have open heart surgery, a revelation that was really unexpected and well received by the audience, who yelled words of encouragement.

"You be good to your mom and dad," she later told her fans. (You don't hear that everyday -- especially from a sexed-up pop starlet.)

Lady Gaga also knows where a big chunk of her fan base lies -- with the gays!

Unlike some artists who shy away from the major elephant in the room -- Beyonce for one -- Lady Gaga acknowledges her dedicated fans. During more than one interview I've heard Lady Gaga give shout outs to her same-sex loving followers. And during last night's concert, she dedicated the song "Boys, Boys, Boys" to her gay fans who are "there for me" and "tell me when I suck," she told the audience, which drove them into frenzied cheers.

From the beginning, Lady Gaga wanted her fans to know of her fashionista tendencies. The words "Haus of Gaga" and "Candy Worhol" flashed onto a cloth screen. The videos shown throughout her performance were reminiscent of scenes from an ultra-eccentric fashion show. (Think Jean-Paul Gaultier.)

I was surprised she was as reserved as she was with her outfits. After the MTV Music Video Awards where she had a number of costume changes that included what appeared to be a bird’s nest on her face and homage to the abominable snowman, I expected more of the same. Instead there were only about four real wardrobe changes. Most of them looked like they had been salvaged from the movie "Flash Gordon." (I could have done without her bubble dress. Complete. Disaster.)

I have to admit, when I first saw Lady Gaga perform last summer on an episode of "So You Think You Can Dance," I was convinced that she was simply a studio voice with a manufactured look. I have since rethought my stance on her voice. It’s fantastic by today’s standards. All that she really needs to work on is her timing. A 90-minute wait for an hour-long show is as over-the-top as she is. Maybe a (fashionable) alarm clock might help.

GaGa Reveals MORE Info On Upcoming Projects

Kanye West can rest assured that new tourmate Lady Gaga has got his back.

Gaga said on Monday that it was unfair for fans to judge West for his onstage confrontation with Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month.

"I can tell you that he's very sorry, and he made a mistake, and he knows it," Gaga told The Canadian Press over the telephone from Virginia, where the personable pop star munched on a bowl of cereal.

"But at the end of the day, he is a pioneer in hip-hop music, and he changed what hip-hop music means. And I think that it's time for everyone to kind of take their heads out of the newspapers and remember that, in truth, Kanye's making most of the music we hear on the radio today. "

"He has a tremendous effect on everybody's lives and I think it's unfair to judge a person by one thing that they said."

Though Gaga has offered her support to West now, what was her reaction in the moment when West wrested the mike away?

"It was: 'Oh jeez,"' she said.

The platinum-blond electro singer says she's not worried that fans who attend their co-headlining tour this fall will harbour ill will toward West, though she conceded that "you can never really tell what kind of response or what effect it will have on anything."

Meantime, she and West are hard at work designing their tour, which begins in November and has scheduled stops in Saskatoon, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

Gaga says they will use a new stage that stretches from one side of the arena to the other - "imagine an in-the-round experience, but larger," Gaga said.

Gaga also provided a look inside the notion behind the show - and, for fans of the flamboyantly bizarre singer, the high-concept show sounds as though it will be unlikely to disappoint.

"The storyline is that Kanye is on one end of the stage and I'm on the other, and the whole show, we are trying to get to where each other is," she said. "I want something that he has, which is the fame, and he wants something that I have, which is home, and my humble beginnings. So we battle each other throughout the entire performance to steal each other's spaces."

"So I'm essentially on a quest to kill Kanye West to steal his fame."

Gaga's debut CD "The Fame" has reached No. 1 on the albums chart in Canada, where the record has been certified three-times platinum since its release last year. She says she'll "probably" release a new record next year, but in the meantime, she's coming out with a double-disc version of her debut that will feature almost a full album's worth of new material.

She also says that her "SNL" performance this weekend will be more, um, restrained than past performances.

"I've got a couple things and ideas that we're working on, but truthfully I didn't want to do kind of any overproduction on 'SNL' because it's a very iconic performance in itself, the 'SNL' performance," she said.

"So it's way more about other things. It's way more about the choreography, it's about the songs, and I feel like I'm transitioning into a space where people are really recognizing me as a musician and I'm exploring that too."

Gaga Talks SNL Appearance & The Fame Monster

After her fake-blood-and-drama-filled performance at the Video Music Awards, it seems that Lady Gaga won't be taking a break any time soon. She's appearing on "Saturday Night Live" on Saturday, is re-releasing her hit debut with several bonus tracks as The Fame: Monster on November 24, and she launches her co-headlining "Fame Kills" tour with Kanye West next month — and she said she'll be launching her own headlining tour in March. She talked about all of the above in recent interviews with Las Vegas radio station KLUC and San Diego's Star 94.1.

"I have a new single that I'm actually going to be performing on 'Saturday Night Live,' [along] with 'Paparazzi,' and then I'm going to put out a kind of new body of work," Gaga told Star 94; the single she's referring to may be a new song fans have been calling "New York." "It's kind of a re-release but [with] more songs than you usually get on a re-release. It's called The Fame: Monster and that's [coming out] in November.

"I wrote almost a full album's worth of material and right now I'm kind of spending my time sifting through it all and doctoring it and making it perfect and deciding what I want everyone to hear," she continued. "But I'm really proud of it. It's definitely life after The Fame."

Asked whether she'll be performing the new material on the "Fame Kills" tour, Gaga told KLUC, "You'll see all of it!"

She also revealed that she'll be embarking on a solo headlining world tour next year. "When I come back from my world tour, I'm doing another world tour after this, which is going to be in March of next year," she told Star 94.1.

At press time, a rep for Gaga had not granted MTV News' request for details on the singer's statements.

Lady GaGa is Billboard's Rising Star

Billboard announced today (Sept. 28) pop sensation Lady GaGa will be named its "Rising Star" at the 2009 Billboard Women In Music event, taking place on Oct. 2nd in New York City. The Billboard Rising Star Award rewards artists that have achieved a level of success and proven to have vast potential in the early stages of their career.

Lady GaGa is the undisputed break-out star of the year for many reasons, including the success of her debut album, "The Fame" (Streamline Records), which has spawned four Billboard Hot 100 hit singles like "Just Dance" and "Poker Face," both which reached No. 1 on the tally. "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" are also the Nos. 2 and 8 best-selling digital songs of all time, with 4.6 million and 4 million downloads, respectively.

GaGa recently became the third artist in the history of the Mainstream Top 40 Airplay chart to have three No. 1 singles from a debut album. "The Fame" is also the best-selling album from a debut artist for 2009, with 1,441,000 copies sold in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition to writing all the tracks on her album, Lady GaGa has previously written for Britney Spears, the Pussycat Dolls, and New Kids on the Block.

"Lady GaGa is one of those rare examples of a truly unique artist with mass appeal," says Bill Werde, Editorial Director of Billboard. "She has established herself as one of today's top songwriters, and the whole world is waiting to see what her next outrageous but brilliant move or style will be. It is that ongoing anticipation, combined with her success that makes her a rising star."

The Billboard Women in Music Event celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business, and is held in conjunction with the much-anticipated publication of Billboard's Women In Music Power Players List - recognizing the top female music executives who are leading the industry with their artistic and business vision.

Billboard will also honor Grammy Award-winning artist and pop culture icon Beyoncé with the coveted Billboard Woman of The Year Award at the event.

Lady GaGa Quote of the Day

Here's today's Lady GaGa quote of the day:

Akon: Lady Gaga "Is a Diamond in the Rough"

MTV.com – After winning three Moonmen at the 2009 VMAs and becoming the first singer in a decade to hit #1 with her first two singles, Lady Gaga has definitely certified herself as the breakout star of the year.

Akon, who signed Gaga to his Kon Live Distribution label in 2008 and calls her his “franchise player,” said his protĂ©gĂ©’s success is the result of a lot of hard work.

“She’s definitely paid her dues,” ‘Kon told MTV News. “She’s been through all kinds of strings and ropes. She’s jumped through all kinds of hoops. It was just a matter of time for her. You can’t stop true talent. And you can’t stop the truth. If that’s what it is, that’s what it is. At the end of the day, she’s one of those rare finds. A diamond in the rough that you just have to polish out and let shine, and that’s exactly what she’s doing.”

The often outrageously costumed singer scored VMA wins for Best New Artist, Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects with her “Paparazzi” video. Next up, she’ll take her theatrical act on the road for her co-headlining tour with Kanye West. She told the BBC last month that the trek would be “groundbreaking.”

Akon — who has also had a hand in the careers of T-Pain, Rock City, and Kat DeLuna, among others — is clearly proud of how far Gaga has come.

“It’s Gaga all day,” ‘Kon enthused. “Gaga, at the end of the day, is the truth. I love her. Right now my heart is with Gaga.”

Irish Fighting Over Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is in the middle of a million dollar lawsuit messier than her blood-soaked VMA performance.

An Irish entertainment company called "Grooveyard" claims they were looking to book talent for October concerts in Belfast and Dublin, when they struck a deal with a NY-based company claiming to rep Lady Gaga.

In the lawsuit, Grooveyard claims they shelled out $320,000 to book Gaga -- but now they believe the guy who took the check may not rep Gaga after all. Here's why:

Grooveyard claims after they began promoting Gaga's shows -- mega-promoters AEG Live hit them with a cease and desist letter, stating AEG has the sole authority to book Lady G.

So now, Grooveyard is pissed, confused ... and demanding their money back in a million-dollar lawsuit filed in NY State court.

What's the lesson here? Don't give someone $320,000 unless you know -- for sure -- who they are.

Grace Coddington on Meeting with GaGa

Vogue creative director, Grace Coddington talks about meeting the Lady:

"I met her backstage at Marc Jacobs and introduced myself. She was wearing a ferociously studded mask and insisted on kissing my cheek, which almost blinded me. Gaga really makes such an effort just for a simple meeting in the office. She was wearing Philip Treacy’s hat with Vogue written on it when she came to see Anna, and when she came to see me the next day she had sprayed her hair red. I was really amused and flattered."

If You Haven't Heard...

This week's If You Haven't Heard... is Disco Heaven. This song was not featured on Lady GaGa's album The Fame. Check out the video with lyrics below:

Vera Wang: "Lady GaGa Knows Who She Is"

Vera Wang has been an icon in the fashion industry for quite some time now, but that doesn't mean the style veteran isn't constantly being mesmerized by all the new fashionistas emerging on the entertainment scene. Most notably these days, it's Lady Gaga who has all of the fashion world buzzing, including Wang.

"I think she's always been original. I think she knows who she is," she told MTV News at Fashion Week in New York. "I think she's truthful to herself. I like people who are truthful to who they are and express who they are. I find that fascinating. ... She knows what she's doing for her."
